The Department of Health is seeking expressions of interest from Indigenous organisations to participate in the co-design and implementation approach of a national service to support older Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to access and receive the care they need and an Indigenous assessment workforce to ensure the workforce reflects the diversity of circumstance and need of Indigenous people across Australia in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas.

In 2021, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (Royal Commission) released recommendations to systematically improve aged care services in Australia. Recommendation 47 specifically looks to support Indigenous Australians to access aged care services with an understanding of cultural and community needs.
