To develop accreditation standards for Medicare Locals, and to develop appropriate support and training material for Medicare Locals and for accreditation providers.

A key component of the Australian Government's National Health Reforms is the establishment of a new nation-wide network of Medicare Locals.
Medicare Locals are primary health care organisations, established to coordinate primary health care delivery and tackle local health care needs and service gaps. They will work with general practice, allied health and community health care providers to drive improvements and greater integration in primary health care and ensure that services are better tailored to meet the needs of local communities.
The Department requires the services and expertise of a suitably qualified organisation to undertake appropriate research, analysis and consultation to:
•develop a set of accreditation standards for Medicare Locals, which will include:
?'core' accreditation standards for Medicare Locals (including assessment criteria, indicators and ratings); and
?guidelines for the application of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care's (ACSQHC) National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards to those Medicare Locals providing health services
•develop support and training materials for the Medicare Locals accreditation standards, in consultation with Medicare Locals and accreditation providers;
•print the final standards and support/training materials (once approved by the Department) and distribute to all Medicare Locals and accreditation providers; and
•provide advice on the suitability of these standards as the accreditation standards for the Medicare Locals National body.
