Many cereals, including wheat, display a higher level of frost tolerance during the vegetative stage of growth than during the reproductive phase (flowering and grain filling). This investment program seeks applicants to determine the genetic and biochemical basis for this difference in tolerance in wheat and identify candidate wheat genes and pathways for manipulation to extend and/or create a higher level of frost tolerance in reproductive tissues. The outputs from this investment will be new knowledge and genetic tools that Australian wheat breeders can utilise to increase the rate of genetic gain for yield in frost-prone cropping regions.
