DSHIS requires the services of a reinsurance broker who will be responsible for the administration and co-ordination of the entire DSHIS reinsurance program. DSHIS's current reinsurance arrangements comprises three programs: - Catastrophe Excess Loss Reinsurance - Liability Excess of Loss Reinsurance; and- Per Policy Excess of Loss Reinsurance. Reinsurance is purchased to protect DSHIS against claims that exceed a figure considered too large for the DSHI Scheme to absorb in it's normal day to day operational strategy. DSHIS has approximately 77,000 policyholders with aggregate exposure of $21.3 billion Australia wide. The Scheme generates approximately $23m (excluding state levies) in premium income annually and cedes approximately $3.9m to reinsurers across its three reinsurance programs.
