The Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO) is a division within the Department of Industry Innovation and Science, whose core mission is to provide world-class astronomical observing capabilities that enable its user community of Australian astronomers to do outstanding science. The AAO is Australia’s national optical astronomy observatory. It operates the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) on behalf of the astronomical community of Australia. The telescopes are located on Siding Spring Mountain near Coonabarabran in NSW.  The AAO’s headquarters and laboratory are at North Ryde in Sydney. The AAO is also a world leader in astronomical research and in the development of innovative telescope instrumentation.

The Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT) Dome bus bar system was commissioned in 1974 and is currently still in use today.  The bus bar transfers power and signals from the fixed part of the building to the rotating dome to power equipment such as the dome crane, dome lighting and shutter/windscreen position.

The system is now considered obsolete and the ability to obtain spare parts is limited.  Supporting the existing bus bar system has been through run down of existing spares.  This leaves the observatory vulnerable if a major bus bar crash occurs and there is insufficient spares to restore the system to a serviceable state.

Accordingly, the Department invites suitably qualified consultants/contractors to submit a tender for the supply (only) of a suitable insulated conductor rail system that will be able to be supported for at least the next five years.
