Chemostratigraphic analyses
As part of the extension of the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program, GA has identified target areas for mineral, energy and groundwater studies. These studies are aimed at exploring Australia’s resource potential and boosting investment. A key component of this program is directed at improving our understanding of the stratigraphy, unit correlations and petroleum prospectivity of an underexplored and relatively poorly understood Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic sedimentary basin.
As a component of this basin project, Geoscience Australia proposes to carry out chemostratigraphic analyses on ~10 wells across this basin, totalling up to 1000 core or cutting rock samples to better establish chemostratigraphic correlations based on changes in elemental and isotopic geochemistry. These chemostratigraphic results will be compared to publically available chemostratigraphic data in the basin and will allow interpretation on a basin- to continent-wide geological context. This new data will significantly contribute to a much better understanding of the sub-surface geology of this sedimentary basin.
