The Department is committed to preventing avoidable vision impairment and blindness in Australia. This includes improving eye health services, preventing and treating eye conditions, and improving eye health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Department of Health is seeking Tenders for a second National Eye Health Survey (NEHS2) to obtain current data on the incidence of vision loss, blindness and eye disease in the population.
In the period since the data was collected in the first NEHS in 2015-16, the Australian population has aged and there has been an increase in the prevalence of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.
The objective of the NEHS2 is to obtain comparable data to that collected in the NEHS prevalence and causes of vision impairment, blindness and eye disease. An update to the NEHS will allow the current burden of eye disease in Australia to be assessed and establish a time series for the purposes of trend analysis.
Data provided by the NEHS2 will be comparable with the 2016 NEHS, providing accurate measures of progress in reducing the burden of vision impairment and providing an evidence base for targeted health care provision. The NEHS2 will also provide information to assess progress in closing the gap in eye health for Indigenous Australians.
The NEHS2 survey should use methodology similar to the 2016 NEHS to enable comparison of the prevalence and major causes of vision impairment and blindness in Australia. The 2016 NEHS report is available at www.vision2020australia.org.au/resources/national-eye-health-survey-report/
