Australia is committed to a stepped-up engagement for a more resilient Pacific. A stable, prosperous, peaceful and resilient Solomon Islands is critical to Australia's interests. We are Solomon Island’s largest development partner; its main partner on economic and human development; and its most active supporter response to the COVID-19 crisis.

The new Australia Solomon Islands Partnership in Justice (ASIPJ) is expected to be up to $32 million over four years (2021-2025), with possible extensions.

It is anticipated that ASIPJ will support the Solomon Islands Government to strengthen the national judiciary, legislative capacity, access to justice and correctional services, as stated in the Australia’s COVID-19 development strategy, Partnerships for Recovery. This program will build on the progress and lessons learned from the current Solomon Islands Justice Program 2017-2021 (SIJP) and its predecessors implemented under the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

Australia’s current support to the justice sector is provided via the SIJP which is due to conclude on 31 December 2021. SIJP is providing technical advice across key justice agencies including the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, courts and national judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutor, Police Prosecutors Department, the Public Solicitor’s Office, the Attorney-General’s Chambers and Correctional Services Solomon Islands. This institutional support also includes engagement at Ministry level to assist with legislative reform and particular emerging issues of concern for the Justice sector.

SIJP has also worked with multi-lateral partners to support access to justice projects across the breadth of Solomon Islands, include rural and remote communities. Projects have included working with Public Solicitor’s Office to provide paralegal support and community legal advocates, who are critical in providing legal information and options for management of grievances and redress through the justice sector.

Unprecedented travel restrictions and COVID-19 impacts and constraints regarding aid activities in Solomon Islands have affected the design of some long-term Solomon Islands programs. There is a continuing need for flexibility and adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.
