The Australian Government recently announced a number of data initiatives to create a front door to Australian Government data and support Australia in becoming a world-leading digital economy and society by 2030. The Digital Atlas of Australia, announced in the 2021 Federal budget, is one of these initiatives and will be led by Geoscience Australia.

The Digital Atlas of Australia will be an interactive, secure, and easy-to-use online platform that brings together a range of valuable, trusted national datasets--open and free. It will harness the power of near real-time, and historic data on Australia’s geography, population, the economy, employment, infrastructure, health, land and the environment. The end goal is to give business, the public and government the power to make more informed data-driven decisions to keep our country safe, to promote the wellbeing of our people and environment, create new business opportunities and make personal ventures possible.

The Digital Atlas of Australia program seeks to improve access to national road data for both public access and official Australian Government use cases. Three categories of nationally consistent road accessible via the Digital Atlas of Australia are being considered in the following configurations:

Category 1 – Simplified National Roads Data (Open Access), plus

Category 2 – Enhanced National Roads Data (Australian Government Authenticated User Access)

Category 3 – Enhanced National Roads Data (Open Access)
