Description:

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is seeking a review into options to improve and harmonise municipal waste collection and recovery with a view to increasing the recovery rate of municipal waste and improving the quality, quantity and competitiveness of Australian recycled content.

Other Instructions:

High levels of contamination in municipal solid waste in Australia makes it difficult to produce high quality, competitively priced resources for composting, re-processing and remanufacturing.

Greater consistency and better practice municipal waste collection and recovery will provide certainty to the waste and resource recovery sector and assist Australia’s transition to a more circular economy, encouraging improved efficiency and preserving precious resources in our environment. It may also increase resource recovery rates and reduce material contamination, enabling the sector to receive and produce higher quality resources, boosting its commercial viability and competitiveness globally.

All governments are working towards more harmonised and efficient approaches to municipal waste collection.

Deliverables from this tender will contribute to the delivery of a national implementation road map that considers costs and benefits of improving the harmonisation of municipal waste collection, as agreed by Australia’s Environment Ministers on 15 April 2021.

The work will also contribute to action item 3.7 of the Action Plan which tasks all governments to consider national standards for kerbside recycling collection and materials recovery facilities to improve consistency and performance.
