Investment Description

There is a data gap relating to the plant health impacts and actual yield risk from sowing lentil seeds with known levels of infected cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) and bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV). As the yield risk is unknown, growers are not seed testing and are unable to make informed choices on planting virus infected lentil seeds.

This investment will provide the Southern region lentil growers, advisers and commercial seed businesses with a ‘Risk Matrix Guide’ that informs on the quantified yield risk of planting various levels of CMV, AMV & BYMV infected lentil seed with the anticipated long-term outcome of reducing the levels of the viral diseases CMV, AMV and BYMV in the cropping system.

Investment Outcome

By 2028, 37% of lentil growers in the Southern Region will have decreased the yield loss from CMV, AMV and BYMV in lentils by at least 25% through the adoption of seed testing and planting according to the yield risk of planting lentil seeds with known levels of virus infection.

Outputs

Output  1

By 2024 deliver to industry the quantified yield risk of planting known levels of CMV, AMV and BYMV infected lentil seed in the Southern region.

Details:

  • Conduct field experiments over 2 years. Field experiments located in key lentil growing areas of the Southern     region.
  • Measure yield impact of planting differing levels of seed infection.
  • Determine for all treatments, plant density, survival of seed-infected plants, disease progress for current season virus infection, grain yield and subsequent incidence of virus level in harvested seed.

Output  2

By 2024 a ‘Risk Matrix Guide’ that provides information on the risk to yield of planting CMV, AMV and BYMV infected lentil seed in the Southern region will be published and delivered to growers, advisers and seed production businesses.

Output 3

By 2024, delivery of a communication package stemming from the research outcomes.

Details:

  • Develop a communications plan in consultation with GRDC within the first 3 months of project commencing.
  • The communications plan will ensure the outputs generated in this investment reach the intended audience and promote adoption of recommendations.

Evaluation Criteria

The table below list the evaluation criteria which will be used to evaluate each application.

1

A clear and thorough plan to deliver the project outcome, specifying:

a) expected steps to deliver the outcome (pathway to market)
b) identification of target users of the project outputs (who will the project directly deliver to e.g. grower, adviser, plant breeder, pathologist, the GRDC)
c) specific information, products and/or services to be delivered to target users
d) potential for the development of commercial IP

2 A clear and thorough plan to achieve the project outputs, specifying:

a) method to be used (including anticipated statistical analysis capacity)
b) proposed milestones
c) proposed locations of field experiments (if required to deliver project outputs)
d) staffing (including relevant skills, experience and availability of key personnel and proposed subcontractors)
e) budget (defining the funds sought in each year of the project and the potential investment from all parties)
f) project structure and management arrangements

3 Demonstrated track record of the project team, including:

a) relevant achievements of the project leader in providing leadership, co-ordination, management, monitoring and evaluation and the timely delivery of high quality outputs
b) relevant technical knowledge and experience of all key personnel (including proposed subcontractors) in the research area
c) relevant achievements in the delivery of commercial IP (if relevant)
d) ability of the project team to collaborate with the relevant research organisations and industry personnel to build on the research (national and international) already undertaken in this area
20%
4 Freedom to operate in regard to the provision of the project outputs to GRDC or a third party if required:

a) Detail any Research organisation intellectual property that is required to deliver the project outputs and any restrictions that may impact on the provision of project outputs to GRDC or a third party, if required
b) Detail any third-party intellectual property that is required to deliver the project outputs and any restrictions that may impact on the provision of projects outputs to GRDC or a third party, if required
