Physical materials and collections (collected or generated) can be outputs of GRDC investments. Examples include plants, soils, isolate collections of weeds, insects, and microorganisms, or the nucleic acids extracted from these materials. Similarly, an investment may generate manipulated organisms for research purposes (e.g. gene knock outs). Sometimes live biological cultures are produced as part of GRDC investments which have significant relevance to industry in future research but also require significant resources to maintain. A good example includes pesticide resistant weed, insect or fungal cultures. It may be important to ensure this biological material is maintained past the completion of an investment, however there are currently no contractual obligations stipulated by GRDC about how research partners store and maintain these materials. Biological collections also play a crucial role in species identification and biodiversity cataloguing, which informs activities such as pest surveillance and biosecurity, and hence are important assets to the grains industry. This investment is for a consultancy that will review the current status of physical materials and collections arising from GRDC investments and make recommendations on how these might be better managed in the future.
