Wheat powdery mildew (WPM) can cause up to 25% yield loss in Australia with commonly grown varieties possessing poor resistance, ranging from susceptible to very susceptible (SVS). In the Northern region WPM is particularly problematic in the western lower rainfall areas of NSW in years of higher than average rainfall and irrigated paddocks, though is found throughout the wheat growing regions of NSW.

In the Northern region, shifts in fungicide sensitivity and resistance to both Group 3 (DMI) and Group 11 (QoI) fungicides have been detected in WPM in paddocks across SE, SW, NE and NW NSW. Resistance to Group 3 (DMI) fungicides propiconazole and tebuconazole was detected in NSW and VIC, with frequencies ranging from 50 to 100% of in-field samples. Fungicide resistance to all Group 11 (QoI) fungicides in WPM was first detected in-field in NSW, SA, Tas and Vic Australia in 2019. Detection of fungicide resistance indicates potential inefficacy of these fungicide groups when applied in crop. The alternative fungicide Group 7 (SDHI) has limited registered products for WPM. Resistance management strategies are necessary to prevent loss or reduced efficacy of the fungicide options available to manage this disease.

Fungicide resistance management strategies were previously developed for WPM by Trengove Consulting in SA (SAGIT Project TC120) in 2020 and 2021. The key outcomes of this project highlighted the effectiveness of varietal resistance and the optimal variety by fungicide application strategies as measured by yield gain.

This investment builds upon the findings in the SAGIT Project TC120 as well as a similar investment for the Southern Region (TRE2204-001RTX) to expand the validation and extension of WPM management strategies to areas in the Northern region impacted by WPM.

Investment Outcome

By 2025 wheat growers in southern NSW will have improved understanding of powdery mildew in wheat and the knowledge to implement cost effective and sustainable management strategies to reduce yield loss and minimise further development of fungicide resistance.

Outputs

Output 1 - By January 2025, determine the variation in fungicide resistance in wheat powdery mildew populations throughout NSW.

Details:

  • Testing for fungicide resistance in two trial sites managed under a separate procurement for 2 years and determining presence of resistance mutations.
  • Determining the variability in resistance levels within and between regions where resistance has previously been found by conducting resistance testing for samples collected in coordination with contract DPI2207-002RTX (Disease surveillance and related diagnostics for the Australian grains industry (NSW)) across 15 paddocks in each of NW, NE, SW and SE NSW (60 total).

Output 2 -  By May 2025, delivery of extension and communication activities targeted at growers and advisers to increase understanding of the fungicide resistance in wheat powdery mildew.

Details:

  • Conducting a minimum of 4 presentations at field trial sites as part of local grower group ‘field walk’ events (minimum 1 per year x 2 trial sites x 2 years).
  • Conducting a webinar or similar as agreed that raises awareness of WPM in the Northern Region and communicates best management practice for fungicide resistance as informed by the results of the project.
  • Conducting a minimum of 2 presentations at GRDC Research Updates or industry forums/workshops
  • Developing written and technical content for a Factsheet (or Case Study) in collaboration with AFREN that is targeted at growers and advisors and utilises the validated results from Output 1. This will include the details of key WPM management strategies for southern NSW, economic costs and benefits analysis tables (treatment costs/benefits) to inform grower decision making and will be formatted, published and promoted through AFREN and GRDC communication channels.
