Small, flowered mallow or marshmallow (Malva parviflora) is a widely distributed, difficult to manage weed that has thrived in grain cropping regions due to the adoption of no-till, the reduction of livestock in the farming system, and the biological characteristics of the species. Growers in southern Western Australia have reported that controlling late summer and early autumn germinations of marshmallow cause the greatest issues for management. Poor early germination management results in large plants present during sowing that are difficult to kill and cause yield losses due to competition with the crop. Additionally, previous research has determined that marshmallow weed seeds require high, fluctuating temperatures to break dormancy. Seeds from cooler, wetter areas take longer and spread germination over at least the first two seasons. This exacerbates the issue of controlling marshmallow in southern WA, as germination and emergence can be more staggered, a single herbicide knockdown is unlikely to be sufficient, and long-term monitoring and management consideration is required to effectively reduce the weed seed bank.

Previous demonstration and extension trials have highlighted that herbicide choice and application timing are extremely important factors when managing late summer and early autumn germinating marshmallow. In addition, marshmallow is inherently tolerant of glyphosate. If knockdowns do not adequately control marshmallow, because they do not contain appropriate actives or are applied when the weed is too large or stressed, the plant is likely to reshoot and continue to grow, resulting in large marshmallow plants present during early crop emergence that are extremely difficult to kill.

This investment will extend information to address grower knowledge gaps on the biology and ecology of marshmallow and how this determines the success of management decisions. Trials will be established to demonstrate effective management strategies of early germinations of marshmallow to impacted growers in southern Western Australia

Project Outcome: By April 2024, growers in southern Western Australia will have the understanding and resources regarding the effective management of marshmallow (Malva parviflora) in their farming system
