To successfully integrate long coleoptile wheat (LCW) into Australian farming systems grain growers and industry (seed companies) require an understanding of complex environmental and management interactions. Underpinning the development of LCW (wide scale commercial release in 2022) to provide growers with tools (in the form of varieties) to access deeper soil moisture, is decades of research by CSIRO and GRDC investment of approximately $11.5 million. Small scale field research in WA and Qld, along with industry intelligence has identified knowledge gaps to permit the successful integration of LCW into Australian farming systems. A dedicated holistic research effort across contrasting production environments, soils and farming systems will lead to productivity gains and increased adoption of LCW genotypes at the time of their release.

Foundational to achieving successful integration and adoption of LCW will be a common industry standard for measuring and defining the category of wheat coleoptile length (e.g., normal (80 mm), long (80-100 mm) and super long (100 mm plus).  Industry best practice recommendations for the established wheat coleoptile categories, not specific to any variety or company, will be developed through G*E*M approaches using laboratory, glasshouse, small plot field experimentation and on-farm trials. Experimental approaches seek to leverage interactions of components, such as but not limited to: long coleoptile trait interactions with inherent soil physical and chemical properties, conditions at sowing (moisture and temperature), environment, machinery (depth control systems), soil amelioration treatments, pre-seeding operations, nutrition, disease, weed and pest control and related chemical applications.

The respondents should demonstrate how they will engage across all wheat breeding companies, industry and research communities to develop standards, access appropriate genetics, and deliver best practice guidelines to growers. The driving focus of this investment is to work collaboratively and build on current work within this area for the benefit of grain growers and industry as a whole.
