Geoscience Australia is inviting suitably qualified suppliers to submit a tender for a Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) for GEO Week 2019.

Background

The intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (earthobservations.org ) brings together 105 governments and 127 international organisations to apply Earth observations to key global agendas: the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

GEO meets annually in Plenary where important topics are discussed and major strategic decisions are made.  Plenary Meetings are at a senior official level.  At the Ministerial level GEO meets irregularly in a Ministerial Summit format (usually once every four years).  Member governments are represented by ministers (including cabinet-level ministers), ambassdors and other senior representatives.  Approximately 600-700 participants can be expected to the Ministerial Summit.

From the 3rd  to 9th of November 2019 Australia will host “GEO Week 2019” in Canberra.  GEO Week 2019 will include a Plenary Meeting and a Ministerial Summit and will have the theme of “Earth observations: investments in the digital economy”.  Approximately 500-700 participants can be expected to the Plenary Meeting, and 600-700 for the Ministerial Summit.

GEO Week 2019 will incorporate a range of side events and an exhibition.

The Australian Government is a Member of GEO.  Through its participation in GEO, Australia seeks to:

  • Ensure the benefits of Earth observation for Australian communities and businesses;
  • Support the uptake of Earth observations for the sustainable development of other countries.

Australia has been announced as host nation.  As Australia’s Principal representative to GEO, Geoscience Australia is leading a ‘Team Australian Government’ approach to organising GEO Week.  The team will include the Department of Industry, CSIRO, the Australian Space Agency and other interested agencies.

The Executive Committee of GEO is responsible for the agenda for the meetings and acceptance of side events and exhibitors.  Australia is a member of this Executive Committee.  The Secretariat of GEO (employees), based in Geneva, will play an important role in the organisation of the event in co-operation with the Australian Government.
