The scope of the assessment and review of Australia’s list of exposure standards will involve:

  1. developing a methodology for the assessment and review of current exposure standards in consultation with Safe Work Australia staff
  2. assessing the current 644 exposure standards using this methodology to develop a revised list
  3. developing criteria for mandatory exposure standards based on risk and recommending a set of mandatory exposure standards using the criteria
  4. considering whether an updated standard is required for each chemical in the revised list, and if so, recommending a new level for the standard
  5. reporting on the key findings and recommendations, and
  6. participating in stakeholder information/consultation sessions 

Please note, a detailed toxicological and epidemiological evaluation of the scientific data for each chemical is outside the scope of this project.

The successful tender must meet the following mandatory minimum requirements:

  1. a tertiary qualifications in occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology, science or a related discipline or extensive equivalent experience
  2. a minimum of five years professional experience in occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology, science or a related discipline, preferably involving the control workplace hazardous chemicals or the use or development of exposure standards, including biological exposure standards
  3. high level of analytical and problem-solving skills, in particular related to the technical assessment of hazardous chemicals and health effects
  4. highly developed communication skills (both oral and written)
  5. knowledge and understanding of work health and safety laws in Australia and the use of exposure standards to control exposures to hazardous chemicals, and
  6. awareness of current and emerging issues related to exposure standards, the health effects of hazardous chemicals and exposure controls.
